Suicidal Ideation Treatment

Suicide is the leading cause of death amongst youth in Massachusetts. According to the Office of the Child Advocate, suicide risk amongst youth in Massachusetts is on the rise. If you know a teen experiencing suicidal thoughts, seek treatment immediately. New Harbor Behavioral Health offers outpatient treatment for suicidal ideation as well as common mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety.

Warning Signs of Suicidal Ideation

Recognizing warning signs and risk factors of suicidal ideation helps reduce suicide risk in loved ones. Some teens may have underlying mental illness, such as depression, that has gone undiagnosed that may contribute to suicidal ideation. Others may suffer due to traumatic events.

Common warning signs of suicidal ideation include:

  • Guilt or shame
  • Feeling like a burden to others
  • Feeling empty, hopeless, or trapped
  • Extreme sadness, anger, or anxiety
  • Emotional or physical pain
  • Drastic changes in behavior
  • Withdrawing from social settings
  • Taking dangerous risks
  • Extreme mood swings
  • Changes to eating or sleeping patterns
  • Substance abuse

If you recognize any of these warning signs in a loved one, especially in the behavior has increased, it’s time to host an intervention or seek help from a mental health professional immediately.

What Is Passive Suicidal Ideation?

Passive suicidal ideation occurs when an individual has thoughts or feelings about wanting to die without actual planning. When passive suicidal ideation occurs, it could be the result of an underlying mental health concern such as depression or anxiety. Although the individual has not taken any plans or steps towards suicide, these thoughts and feelings are still harmful and should never be overlooked. Through outpatient treatment, teens with passive suicidal ideation may begin to recognize where those thoughts and feelings come from and take actionable steps towards preventing suicidal risk.

Treatment Plan

New Harbor Behavioral Health offers outpatient treatment programs for teens struggling with mental illness and symptoms often associated with these conditions. The program is available to teens who live in Massachusetts that are willing to travel to our treatment center in Dedham, Massachusetts.

Outpatient treatment allows teens to seek treatment while still getting to go to school, attend daily activities, and return home to their families in the evenings. This is ideal for those who want to seek treatment privately throughout the week. Our outpatient treatment programs combine several therapeutic modalities, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Group Therapy
  • Individual Psychotherapy
  • Family Therapy
  • Trauma Informed Therapy

Treatment that teens receive for suicidal ideation occurs through a personalized approach based on how they are feeling and what they are struggling with. Severe cases may be referred to an inpatient treatment center if concerns for their wellbeing require 24/7 monitoring.
